Install on the SASIxp Desktop (New Installation)

Follow these steps to put the Scheduling Optimizer on your SASIxp Desktop.

Place the Scheduling Optimizer and License File Writer program files in the SASIxp directory.
  • In Windows, navigate to the SASIxp directory (where the SASIxp software is installed).
  • Copy the Scheduling Optimizer program file spo.exe and the License File Writer program file lfw.exe to the SASIxp directory from the media on which it was provided to you.
Add the Scheduling Optimizer atom to the SASIxp desktop.
  • Start SASIxp and log in as a Security Officer.
  • From the "File" menu, select "Install Atom…". The "Open" dialog appears.
  • Navigate to the SASIxp directory (where the Scheduling Optimizer program file was placed in the previous step) and select the file spo.exe. Click “Open” to complete the file selection.

  • The message "Are you sure you want to install an external file?" appears. Click OK. An atom named "spo.exe" is placed on the SASIxp desktop.
  • Select (highlight, but do not open) the atom just placed on the SASIxp desktop. From the "File" menu, select "Atom Info…". The "Atom Info" atom opens.
  • In the “Atom Info” form, enter “Sched Optimizer” in both the “Name” and “Short Name” fields, replacing the previous contents.

  • Click OK to save the results. The newly added atom is now labeled Sched Optimizer.
Point the Scheduling Optimizer to your Schedule Pro data.
  • Use Notepad to open the "sasixp.ini" file in your SASIxp directory (where the SASIxp software is installed).
  • Following the “HomePathWindows” line, insert a new line defining the path to your Schedule Pro data directory starting at the SCHEDPRO directory within the SASIxp directory (where the SASIxp software is installed). This line should appear similar to the following; substitute your 3-digit school number for “999” and the digit representing the beginning of the year you are scheduling (e.g. 5 for 2005-06) for “5” in the example shown:

SchedProData = SCHEDPRO\SCHD9995 ; simulation data directory

Save the changed file and exit Notepad.

The Scheduling Optimizer is now installed as an atom on the SASIxp desktop.

Next Step: Install your license. Read the Install License instructions.

Notes

The identifier “SchedProData” must start in the first character position of the line with no initial blanks. You may optionally include one or more blank spaces on either side of the “=”.
If you are running SASIxp on a client workstation configured to start SASIxp from the local hard drive and access the database on a network server, you need to enter the complete network path to the Schedule Pro data directory. The line you enter in the sasixp.ini file then appears similar to the following:

SchedProData = \\SERVER1\FDRIVE\SCHEDPRO\SCHD9995  ; simulation data directory

The program will ignore anything on the line from the semi-colon onward, so you may put any comment you wish in that space. You may also insert blank lines as desired.
If you subsequently need to change the school and/or year the Scheduling Optimizer atom is to schedule, open sasixp.ini in Notepad and change the “SchedProData” line as required. You will need to do this each time you begin scheduling for a new school year.

Current Mass Scheduling users need to do some additional setup steps within SASIxp. See Mass Scheduling with the Scheduling Optimizer.
