Install Standalone

For most school sites, we recommend that you install the Scheduling Optimizer on the SASIxp desktop. In certain situations, however, it may be more convenient to install the Scheduling Optimizer as a standalone Windows application (in this case, the Scheduling Optimizer is run by double clicking a shortcut or file within the Windows environment). Standalone installation is particularly useful in multiple-school SASIxp environments. This document describes the procedure for setting up the Scheduling Optimizer as a standalone Windows application.

Basic Standalone Installation

Copy the program.
  • Create a run folder for the program on your hard disk or select an existing folder. The following assumes you have created the folder c:\spo.
  • Copy the program file spo.exe from the media on which it was provided into the run folder c:\spo.
Create a shortcut.

Important: In the following steps, avoid the use of blanks within the names of any folders or subfolders.

  • Make a note of the complete network path to the Schedule Pro subfolder containing data for the school and year you will be running from this shortcut. The next steps use the example of Lincoln High School, School number 075 with a scheduling year of 2004/05. The target Schedule Pro subfolder is assumed to be t:\sasixp\schedpro\schd0754. Make the necessary adjustments for the configuration you are working with.
  • Use “My Computer” to navigate to the c:\spo folder. Select and right click the spo.exe icon and in the popup menu that appears, select “Create shortcut”. A new shortcut appears in the folder.
  • Rename the shortcut to indicate which school and year it refers to; for example “Lincoln 2004”.
Point the shortcut to your school data.
  • Select and right click the newly renamed shortcut and in the popup menu that appears, select “Properties”. If the dialog box that appears is not already showing the “Shortcut” tab, click on “Shortcut”.
  • Verify that the “Target:” field in the Shortcut tab identifies the run folder and executable program name (possibly in quotes): “C:\spo\spo.exe”. Correct the information in this field if necessary.
  • In step 1) above, you noted the network path to the target Schedule Pro subfolder. Enter this path in the “Start in:” field. Be sure the information you enter completely replaces the previous contents of this field (usually initialized to point to the folder containing the spo.exe file). For our example, the resulting field contents would be t:\sasixp\schedpro\schd0754
  • Click OK to close the window.
Place the Optimizer license key file in the required folder.

The Optimizer license file writer program, lfw.exe, generates a license key file in the same folder the program is run from. Copy this file, named lkeyinfo.txt, to the target Schedule Pro subfolder, the one used to define the “Start in:” path in the shortcut created by the above steps.

The program is now installed and ready to run from Windows. Repeat the above steps to create shortcuts for any additional school/year combinations you are working with.

Advanced Standalone Installation

If your Schedule Pro data subfolder is being accessed over a busy network, you may find that the Scheduling Optimizer’s operation is a bit sluggish. Performance can be improved by modifying each shortcut created according to the “Basic Standalone Installation” instructions using the following steps.

Note: Before beginning the following steps, map the network drive containing the Schedule Pro subfolder to local drive “t”. To do this, navigate to the network drive using “Network Neighborhood” (Windows 98 and NT) or “My Network Places” (Windows 2000 and later), select the required volume and right click. In the popup menu that appears, click on “Map Network Drive…”,  then use the “Drive:” pull down list to select drive letter T. Confirm the mapping of the network drive to drive letter t: and exit the dialog.

Open the shortcut.
  • Use “My Computer” to navigate to the folder containing one of the shortcuts created using the “Standard Installation” steps. Right click on the shortcut and select “Properties” on the popup menu which appears.
  • If not already selected, click on the “Shortcut” tab in the properties dialog.
Add a parameter to the “Target:” field.
  • The “Target:” field in the Shortcut tab contains the folder and program name (possibly in quotes):  C:\spo\spo.exe from the standard installation. Type at least one blank space past the end of this field and, at that position, type “d=” followed immediately (with no blank spaces) by the path to your target Schedule Pro subfolder.

The “Target:” field should now contain the following:

    C:\spo\spo.exe d=t:\sasixp\schedpro\schd0754\

with differences as needed for your configuration.
Define a local folder for work files.
  • Create a folder on a local drive in which the Scheduling Optimizer may place temporary work files for simulations run on this school, e.g. “c:\spotemp075”.
  • Enter the path to the “temporary work files” folder in the “Start in:” field. Be sure the information you enter completely replaces any previous contents of this field. For our example, the resulting field contents would be “c:\spotemp075”.
Place the Optimizer license key file in the required folder.

The Optimizer license file writer program, lfw.exe, generates a license key file in the same folder the program is run from. Copy this file, named lkeyinfo.txt, to the temporary work files folder, the one used to define the “Start in:” path in the shortcut created by the above steps.

The modification to the program installation is now complete. Repeat the above steps for each shortcut created using the Basic Standalone Installation steps. Be sure you use a uniquely named "temporary work files" folder for each school.
